Gevanni smiled, nodding, "You're quite welcome. I was serious about that ride home though, A kid like you shouldn't be outside this late at night." He tilted his head, "But, just so you know i'm no creeper or anthing," he pulled out his badge, showing it to Near. "Here. Go ahead and hold onto it until we get to your place." He offered, smiling.

Near stopped, looking a little unsure. "You're not from around here, are you?" He asked. It went without saying. Although Near had grown up here, he spoke without a southern accent, something else that made him a target for others. HE was an outsider in this place, nothing like the rest of the family that 'took him in'. Taking the badge, Near looked it over, knowing it was real. "That's okay, officer, I don't like that far from here, and I wouldn't want to waste your time." He offered the badge back to Gevanni. "And I'm out this late all the time."

Gevanni tilted his head, smiling, "No, No, I insist. I won't let you run around. Not after what I just saw." He muttered, smiling warmly. "So seriously, just get in the car? please? Or I'll have to just follow you home in the car, and that's a waste." He teased.

It had been a while since someone gave Near an ultimatum like this. "Okay." He said, walking over to the car and getting inside. He paused for a moment, wondering why they weren't moving. Then, he realized Gevanni didn't know where he lived. "Do a U-turn and drive that way. I'd give you street signs, but you don't seem to know your way around." Near smiled, just able to tell.
There was silence for a moment. "Turn left, down that street." Near said, pointing toward where he wanted. Silence once more. "Thank you for helping me, Stephen. I appreciate it."

The brunette drove quietly, the car rumbling gently under them. He smiled, "You're welcome, little one. And while you seem to know my name, i don't know yours." He was surprised, however. This kid wasn't normal. Most people, upon seeing his badge, call him Steven, the ph hard and long. But it wasn't...
This child had correctly guessed his name's origin, and pronounced it correctly.

Near looked up at him. His name was on his badge, but he hadn't told Gevanni his own name. "My name is Nate River, but my best friend nicknamed me 'Near' when we were in middle school, so I prefer to be called that." Of course, no one except Matt and Mello called him Near, since no one else cared enough to know what he wanted. Nathaniel took great pride in the fact that he named both his sons, and refused to call him Near, and, took it upon himself to use Nate whenever addressing him, so his son wouldn't forget who he was and what was truly important.

Gevanni smiled, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Near. Also, thank you for pronouncing my name correctly." He laughed a little, trying to appear harmless. "You can't beleive how many times I've had to correct people about it..."

Near looked confused. "Your name isn't hard though?" The confused whitenette told him. "Last time I checked, whenever ph is together in a word, it almost always makes an f sound." Then, he realized Stephan was a name that was common to Europe, so it wasn't a common pronunciation in the United States, especially this far south. "If it bothers you, you could always have your name legally changed so it was an F instead?" he offered, smiling too.

Gevanni snorted, "My mama would have a fit." He mumbled, although truthfully he hadn't seen the woman in years. He just said it because he was too lazy to change it. "Besides, it's a part of me, always has been. I wouldn't change it for the world." He chuckled. "But if you'd like, you can call me Gevanni. It's kind of my nickname."

"Gevanni..." Near repeated, thinking. "Are you Italian?" He asked, a little worried he was wrong. But Gevanni looked Italian... he had dark hair, he looked European, he had a small accent when he said certain words, he was attractive, unlike almost everyone that lived here... And, it looked as if he hadn't shaved in a few days, so there was some hair growing on his chin. that... sounded Italian. Right?

Amazing! He smiled, "Good guess! Yes, I'm italian. Born in Barcelona herself." he smiled, proud that he was born in the motherland. Of course, he was a naturalised citisen now, and a cop to boot, so he was quite happy with his lot in life. "I'm an american now, however."

"I didn't doubt that you were a citizen, Gevanni. If you weren't, I doubt that you would be here of all places. I've seen people here shoot people who are citizens." He looked down at his knees. "Turn right, on this street." He wondered why Gevanni was here, but didn't want to be rude and ask. Yet, he couldn't imagine why someone was so nice would be in the depths of this kind of hell.
"I-If you don't mind my asking..." Near began, a little nervous. "Why... are you here? I-I mean in Arkansas."

Gevanni smiled, "I've been transferred to the department down here. Apparently, my boss thinks I can do some good." He smiled, "I've already started, I can tell, just by saving a nice boy like you." he took the turn carefully, and started gliding down the street.
"So, why were those three harassing you? Am I going to have trouble with them?" He asked, curious about his new town.

Near sighed, wondering if he should tell him the truth. "No one in this area really likes me. My dad is from the south, but my mom wasn't, and neither am I. They think that I think I'm better than them." He sighed. "I skipped a grade in elementary school, and another in high school, so I suppose they think I look down on them because I think I'm smarter." He shrugged. "That and I don't believe in God, and I don't pretend to either."

The officer frowned to hear a child profess no faith in god. He sighed, "Well, obviously, they aren't very good christians." He muttered. He himself was a devout roman catholic. "And it doesn't matter if you beleive in god, little one, so long as you beleive in something. Besides, he beleives in you." He smiled, "And congratulations on growing so smart!"
