"This isn't a trap! He saved me from that thing and he came willingly. Wouldn't he have just let me die if it was a trap!?" Aletta demanded, and defended Near each chance she was presented. Surprisingly enough, Wedy seemed to agree with her for a most part.
L studied the boy. "Well.. it's hard to tell if he's an adult or a child by their standards. He's the first we've seen. However, I need to point out the necklace." He gestured to the perfect stones and gold. "We can't let anyone else see this."
Near watched the group of men discuss what was happening, understanding none of it. He was starting to get bored and looked away, touching some of the objects on the table. None of them looked particularly dangerous, so he moved through a few glass viles, a few pairs of glasses, some scissors. He lifted a weight too and just continued to look around.
Annoyed by the lack of understanding in the boy, Mello leaned forward and grabbed his shoulder to turn him around. He snapped his fingers to get the creatures attention. Near focused on Mello's and hand said something. Then he moved his hand, as if to indicate water.
This time, Near's head tilted slightly to the left, his dark eyes locking with Mello's for a moment.
Again, Mello said something, and this time, Near's eyes followed the man's lips. There was a strange instance were he considered the idea of taking the language from that man before him, from the haunting blonde. He looked very similar to the way his mother had always been described. Then again, so did the young girl he saved. She smiled at him, but said very little, unless it was a loud, short interruption of one of the men who were speaking.
So, inevitably, Near suddenly rgrabbed Mello's shirt and pulled him forward. The boy was strong, as he grabbed Mello's arm and made it so he was unable to pull away. Then, he kissed the blonde. The contact lingered, but it was entirely chaste.
When Near let him go, Mello fell backward and stared in awe at the white haired boy. "W-What the fuck was what?"
"My people are able to learn communication immediately through lip contact." Near answered clearly, in the language of these new comers. "I am called Near."

"In this instance, Aletta's right." Wedy answered, crossing her arms underneath her ample bosom. Aletta copied the body language, crossing her arms under her much-less-ample breast. Somehow, the male of the family knew he was out-voted. He sighed, and tried to speak, only to be overrun by L, whose observations were keen.
"If anyone sees that necklace," Gevanni commented, his eyes following the wandering boy, taking in the long, pale limbs, the strange lack of clothing, "It's going to be Virginia gold rush all over again." Another part of all those pamphlets, talking about how the native americans had been run out of their own land and basically tormented for gold that didn't exist. His eyes kept coming back to the creature's face. Male, female? ... maybe this species didn't even have genders. That was some weird scifi shit to think there, wasn't it? Gevanni groaned, shaking his head.
Therefore, he almost missed whatever it was that caused everyone to gasp and freak out. He caught the tail end of it though, which was the native's hand on Mello's shirt, and their lips pressed together. Then, suddenly, the alien let go, and exclamations and confusion exploded from the crowd around them. Gevanni distinctly heard the words 'space aids'. Sometimes he wondered how their species had survived.
"What! You could have kissed ME? I'm the one you rescued!" Aletta cried, and Gevanni wondered if she realized she was pouting, her hip stuck out just a bit. It made her look twelve again.
"Aletta, let's NOT try and kiss random... uhm, sorry, you ARE a boy, aren't you?" Wedy asked, pushing some of her own blonde hair out of her face. She seemed entirely nonplussed over the fact that the alien species could absorb language from lip-contact, and was now speaking to them. Politely.
"...Hello Near." Gevanni found himself saying, because no one else had said it yet. "...Welcome to our camp?"

Near turned his attention to the women who spoke to him. "I did not rescue you to kiss you, I recused you because you needed it. Had I done something of that nature, I would have forced my will upon you and I would not do such a thing." Then he smiled at the two women who seemed the most calm, aside from L. "I am male, yes." Came his honest answer as he tilted his head to examine them, most notably L, who was watching him in observing silence. The calculating look reminded him somehow of his father.
"Thank you." The boy smiled at the welcome and then looked to Mello, who still looked shocked, but was beginning to recover.
Finally, Mello fixed his clothing. "Why are you here?"
"It seems much more fitting I ask you this question." Near replied. "I have many questions for you that my people share. Why are you here? What are your plans?" He looked back to L, who Near honestly believed to be their leader. IT was just something about him.
L glanced to Wedy and then Gevanni and Mello. "We crashed here. What we are inside is our space ship. We use it for traveling galaxies."
Near looked interested. "So... it is possible then?" Now he looked both interested and excited. "Do you plan... to fix your ship and leave?"
"Well, we do plan to leave, knowing there are people living here, but it may not be that simple. You see, the gravity-"
"Gravity is the force--" Mello interrupted.
"That keeps objects on the planet. I am aware." Near interrupted Mello and seemed confident in his answer. "I am one of the smartest of my people. There is much more about this planet I know above you, so do not assume I require instruction and explanation. If your ship is unable to fight the gravity, I presume the gravity caused the crash?"
"Correct." L had now approached the boy. "Near, is it?" He questioned. "How... How old are you?"
"I am of age."

"Yeah, but of age for what?" Gevanni nearly choked upon hearing that question rumble through the crowd around them. He turned, and immediately started shooing people away, getting them back to their tasks. No one, of course, wanted to be away from the very first contact with the inhabitants of this still-unnamed world, but to hell with everything if Gevanni was gonna let Beachend fall to peices just because people wanted to gawk.
Once he had everyone who wasn't essential cleared out, he returned to the conversation.
Wedy raised an eyebrow. "Of age to us means anywhere from fifteen years old to twenty five, depending on what you intend to do. How many rotations around the sun has your planet made since your birth?" She would ask for years... "We call that years, but I don't know if you have another word for it."
"Mello, we should probably take the ghost inside, that way we aren't out in the open, and the others don't feel the need to come back and check on us. We can use the hydroponics bay for the interrogation. ...Or... I don't know, does this count as a peace mission? I mean?" He still wasn't sure if they COULD leave, much less if they wanted to. This was the first habitable planet they'd found since Gevanni was born.

Gave was right and everyone knew it. L inevitably lead Near into the ship and gave him a comfortable place to sit. The hydraulics bay was the only place they could keep some of the more dangerous animals they were trying to learn about, so Near passed a few as they moved him into the room where they welcomed him to sit. He preferred to stand however.
Near listened to this explanation. "The planet has circled the sun 16 times since my birth." Came his answered. "Being of age here means I can be assigned, married, and reproduce if that is what I choose to do. It also means I can..." He paused, not sure this was the best thing to tell these people. "I am capable of killing." Came a rather slow, tentative answer. "You all seem concerned my goal is to hurt you and that is not my intention. If I wanted any of you hurt, you would be." It was not a threat. His tone was even and calm, he was stating this as if it was fact.
"What am i being interrogated for?" He asked, his hearing much better than they must have first assumed, since Near had overheard Gevanni whispering to Mello. "I will not allow myself to be confined as you have to the other animals. I am not as docile as a Quagga-Guppy."

How does one explain exactly why the human race was, as a whole, paranoid and jumpy about alien lifeforms. How does one explain that the entirety of the human race's history was violent, bloody and conflictory, and had enough xenophobia to kill a small mule? ...Or a small race, Gevanni supposed. He considered it for a moment, thinking that he'd be better off asking questions about the flora and fauna, glean what they could off of this Near, before they ended up inevitably pissing him and his species off, and causing a terf war.
"You're the first of your kind that has been willing to speak with us." Wedy answered, sitting down, and crossing her legs. Her jeans accented the thighs and hips she would have given a daughter, had she not had her son instead. "Humankind, as a whole, are generally a very pessimistic species. So, we fear that while YOU might not be here to harm us, the rest of your race might not be so kind. Pessimistic, and also opportunistic, us humans." She smiled, her soft mother's smile. "You're still a child by our reckoning. 16 is about Aletta's age too. We won't harm you... But we can't let you go running back to your people with stories of our side which might start a war. You understand, don't you sweetheart?"
Gevanni was, once again, terrified of his mother. The tension in the room was high, and he had to wonder if maybe, just maybe, they shouldn't have had a more... friendly approach to this.
"What's a Quagga-guppy?" Aletta asked, her childlike and bright forthrightness cutting through the tension like a knife. She, unlike the adults, wanted to know EVERYTHING about this world. She wanted to live here, and thrive here, the way she never had on the ship. Here, she was helpful, rather than an unplanned drain on resources. "Do we have one on ship? Are they edible?"

"I am the first of my kind to do so because it has been forbade for anyone to interact until we understand your intentions. So far, we have only seen you take greedily without giving anything back to repay for what you've taken. A balance exists that all that is taken must in some way be repaid. Have no not noticed that consumable water has receded and you must travel further to find it? The animals become more aggressive? To me all of you seem uneducated and greedily, blindly consuming because you know little ever. I do not wish to take offense, since your analysis on your race seems to coincide with mine. You may consider me a child here, but I can assure you, that is not what I am."
Near blinked a few times. This news was not altogether surprising. While he liked these people and found them entertaining to watch, he also would not allow himself of his people to be hurt by them and it seemed that they intended this even if only a minor fear struck them. "You will not be permitted to keep me here, should you try, then my people will retaliate and there will be conflict and bloodshed. I believe the word you people would associate with me is 'prince.' My father is the reigning king. Should anyone, particularly my brother, notice my absence, I will be searched for and I am not the strongest of my people and I have never seen my father fight for one he loves, but I am certain that he has the strength to rip open this..." he paused. "Ship, if he believes it would bring me to him."
At Aleta's question, he blinked a few times. "We passed one." He answered. He walked to one of the walls to the largest creature they had been able to capture. And boy, was this an incredible animal. It was around the size of a full sized adult horse, but had longer, slender legs. It had two heads with a wide assortment of teeth and no eyes. Whenever stye approached it, it shook it's head with incredible strength and broke an entire man's rib cage before they had it sedated. "This is a guagga-guppy." He answered.
Near then attempted to open the door. IT didn't move, as it was locked with electricity. Near tried a bit harder and the hinges of the ship creaked. Finally, with just slightly more effort, he ripped off the door as if he'd ripped a piece of cardboard in half. With the door open, the Quagga-Guppy swayed into the room and rubbed against Near, a thin, ant-eater like tongue grazed the boy and Near scratched under the animal's nose, which was on the top of it's head. The Quagga-Guppy let out a strange sound and laid down, exposing it's stomach.
"Their meat is poisonous, so I do not suggest you attempt to eat them. The also have venomous spikes in the bones, so any attempt to cook it will loose toxic fumes. They will die without the rays of the day of Light, so it is my suggestion that you release these animals from their prisons. I am willing to give you information if it means they will not be imprisoned. However, I do insist that you do not attempt to imprison me in their place. I may be a far more substantial prize, but I have grown with these animals. I believe my knowledge is worth more as cooperative than captive."
ANd, strangely enough, all the animals that could see and smell Near had stopped trying to escaped and appeared relatively calm throughout the time he had been brought into the ship.
"Fascinating." L managed, examining the animal. With absolutely no approval, he nodded. "I tend to agree. You will be free to leave if you cooperative and since you know of us, you should teach us of your people and ways, so we may be more respectful."

The scene before them was like something out of a fairy tale or a disney movie. There wasn't any sort of warning, there was just the pocahontas-like anger lighting up the little prince's face, and then a hush from all the animals they had gathered. Plans for each type of animal, as well as tests, were being run to understand them, and while Gevanni's main focus had been plants, he did understand that the only way to truly understand and make use of an animal was to study it.
Wedy, as always, was far ahead of her son on this. "Then you can tell us how to domesticate the ones it is possible to domesticate? You can tell us which are suitable for pets and which are suitable for work? You can share that knowledge with us, despite your king having banished any contact with us?" She tilted her head, "...On old earth, when a noble made such promises, the King they served did not, under any circumstances have to honor them, nor did they, often enough." She sighed, and settled her elbow on her knee, and her face in her hand. "You're a kind child. You're also very self-righteous. Before the children make any more decisions for ALL of us, perhaps discussions should be had with each race?"
She turned to L, a mother's gaze too similar in this instance to a queen's, "You are a genius, L, and I respect that. But you aren't a politician, and you certainly aren't a diplomat. Don't make deals with people we aren't certain we can trust." With that admonishment she turned to Mello, "You DO have the training to be the diplomat here, but you're holding your tongue. I hope the boy didn't steal it with that kiss?"
Gevanni couldn't hold back a snicker. "M-Mother, please. Be kind?" He asked, because they were in front of someone who was raised royalty after all. "I do kind of agree. There are hundreds of us refugees. We should hold some kind of meeting, and make a group decision. And Near..." He paused, his words lost for a second, as their eyes met again, "Maybe you could talk to your father on our behalf? IF we could all meet at a peace conference, or... a-a negotiating table, we'd probably all be a lot safer."

Near glanced up at the woman before him and studied her. Somehow, he found her a lot like Sayu and his grandmother. She was powerful and strong, she demanded respect and he found compelled to give it to her. "Your societies seem to run via matriarchy and I can respect this." He stated as he watched Wedy. When her argument ended, he replied. "We are not on your planet, and you speak as if you intend for this to be 'new' earth. I can assure you both premises are flawed. To begin, my father trusts me and I have standing on equal grounds with him, as does my brother, our high priest, and if the three Ch'totchin, as long as their decision is unanimous. While my father does not have to agree to anything, he will not be permitted to undo an agreement I made as long as said agreement is upheld on your end. I am asking you do not imprison me here and I will give you viable information on the animals you have here."
The boy, while small in stature definitely spoke more of an adult than a child. "And need I remind you, woman, that I am not a child and I am not a 'child making decisions,' you have no right to speak to me as a lesser, as I hold far more power and standing than you. While I may not be the head of my race, I am one of five possibles that will one day replace my father. You will treat me with respect or I will make it so you are not able to be disrespectful again. I have been nothing but kind and I saved this girl's life. My actions have not been hostile and you have raised the hostility of this room, out of fear or ignorance, I am not sure. However, I will do or say nothing else until you quiet yourself and apologize to me."
L studied this interaction, surprised a boy so young would stand so strongly. He was definitely intelligent and eloquent. He wondered if the boy took Mello's vocabulary and understanding of words, and if he kissed another mortal, how that would change. L wondered if that was why he spoke this way, because Mello had a temper as well and did not tolerate disrespect well. It was a rather unfortunate quality from Ivan. However, he let Wedy have her say.
Mello didn't take too well to being called out in such a way, so he shrugged. "I think you're doing a fantastic job of taking alien relations, so stopping you would probably mean you should stop insulting the only one of them who has contacted us and did something to our benefit. Just because he saved Aletta's life and you've wished her dead her entire life doesn't exactly mean saving her was any big crime." Mello pushed himself to his feet and walked toward the prince.
"You say that your father cannot stop anything you do if it is just, what does that mean exactly?"
Near relaxed, his shoulders slackened. "It means that as long as I do not make outlandish promises or bring harm, he will have to honor my agreement unless you do something to break it. Since it is conditional that you release me, any attempt to detain or harm me will violate this on your end."
Gevanni's suggestion made him slightly worried. He didn't think his father would ever speak to them. "I don't believe my father will actually speak to any of you." He finally stated. "I can try to convince him but I went against his request to not be seen by you and to not interact. He will not be pleased, but I do not believe watching and studying you has brought any new information about that contact will not improve. If you wish for me to make an arrangement, then you must do something for me."
Mello held out his arm to stop L and Wedy. "What is this request? It must be defined before we accept."
Near nodded. "You must release the animals you have captured. If they are imprisoned when the rains come, they will become incredibly aggressive and they will do far more damage than I assume they already have. If a shinigami comes in an attempt to eat the animals you have cornered, it will destroy everything here and likely kill all of your people. Only one living among my people has ever faced one, and according to the famous legend, my father did not kill it alone."

Sharp tongued little pissant, Wedy would give him that. The bit about Matriarchies made her snort and actually laugh a little. Kind of endeared the little prince to her too. So she smiled, a real smile, and nodded, "You're right. I'm sorry. I'm an old woman, and not used to good things or good people. Please, don't take offense." She even managed a little curtsy for the royalty, not in a mocking way, but rather out of respect. The boy was a good speaker, and very sure of his position.
Which, from Gevanni's point of view, seemed quite well off. One of the top five most powerful men in their country had come to see them? And he was a little boy? Wow... That seemed... A little off. He shook his head, remembering that he'd said he was sixteen years old. "Just to clarify, becuase I don't think it's been said enough or in simple enough terms," He joked a little, " We let you come and go as you please, and release the animals, and you'll provide us with as much information as we need?" He asked, "Will you allow a catch-and-release program? You see, our scientists want to study and understand the animals on this planet, and the plants too. The best way we know that is our labs, so... that's what we've been doing. Would that be allowed under this temporary truce?"
"A fair question." Wedy supposed, "And I'd like to clarify something. Just because I wish someone was never born, doesn't mean I wish them dead." She didn't look in Aletta's direction, even when the girl buried herself against her brother's side, with a glower at the woman who had come after her.
"Maybe I can go with near!" Aletta declared, bold as always, "If one of us comes to the king, maybe he'll be more likely to be kind? I mean, I'm just a little girl, so I can't possibly be a threat, and I'd LOVE the opportunity to study their culture!" She was champing at the bit, and Gevanni could FEEL nervousness rising under his skin. His kin, alone in an alien city...

"I cannot promise I will give you any information you ask. Will i educate you on the animals and plants, yes, but I do not see fit to answer any and all questions." He replied, knowing that it could end badly and he would not risk his people, especially his brother and father. Labs... He thought of all the definitions he had come to understand, and assumed in this context he meant laboratory since it was a science based discussion. "I insist that you perhaps avoid capturing anymore animals and do not test any more animals. This is the most docile animal you have managed to capture, but I am sure you can see it is still dangerous and capable of taking life. Some of the other animals in here." He pointed to a large red creature that almost resembled a bat. "This Cross-sterling just recently hatched and if you keep it another day, it will die and release a toxic substance into the air that smells sickly sweet so you will not throw it away. It will draw a colony of them and they will consume the corpse and destroy anything that tries to stop it." The cross-sterling, despite the claims it was newly hatched was larger than Near was tall, with a wing span double Gevanni's height.
Mello held out a hand. "I think we already have a temporary truce. If we agree to release the animals, would you be willing to give all information on the ones we did capture and be willing to explain to us the dangerous ones we should avoid so we do not approach them? This seems fair, we let go of the animals we have and you educate us so we have no need to keep them."
The white hair prince considered this and then nodded. "I can agree to this condition. If you prefer, I will release them individually myself and whomever may scribe my explanation of them."
Near shook his head upon Aletta's request. "My father would never allow any of you inside our sacred city. It would be parallel to an act of war and anyone who attempted this would most likely be killed. I would be entirely unable to stop it too, coincidentally. Your kind are not permitted to our culture and our ways and I do not feel comfortable telling you what they are, as I somehow feel that you would either use this against us or disregard it as weakness. Perhaps in the future, if we establish trust." He also pointed to L. "You mentioned something that your people should not be allowed to see this." He held the medallion around his neck. "I do not know why, but my city is made of this. I believe you call it gold. None of you shall be permitted there and I quite insist that you follow this condition."

Aletta, like the sixteen year old girl she was, stamped her foot, crossing her arms. It felt entirely unfair to her that she should be left out of the conversation, and also out of the adventure. She hated the idea that somehow, the adults would weasel this away from her. The golden-haired girl made up her mind that instant that she wasn't going to take this lying down. All she had to do was become the foremost explorer here, right? That's all that mattered. She'd find that silly golden city at some point, like indiana jones, and then, they'd all realize just how amazing she was.
"We'll do our utmost to keep our people from trying to find or enter your cities." Gevanni agreed, figuring it was already implicit in the fact that Mello had agreed to the truce. "But how are we supposed to deal with the food situation, if we're not allowed to domesticate any of the animals?"
It was a very real situation, considering the ruinous state of their crops and the already-short food supplies. Gevanni had it calculated out that they MIGHT be able to survive a full month on the food they have. Two, if they cut to half rations and everyone works through the light dizziness. But otherwise... Well. It wouldn't be pretty.
"To be completely honest with you, Near," Gevanni said, quickly, before anyone could interrupt him from giving this information away, "We're maybe a month from starving out. Two, if we're lucky. And... I don't know if your people are all herbivores, or what, but we HAVE to have meat to be healthy, or a protein substitute, which, again, we won't be able to find without experimenting." HE paused, "Ah... that probably sounded condescending, and I really don't mean it to, but this is a matter of life and death."

Domesticate? He knew the meaning of it, but knew that domesticated animals were rarely eaten, since they mention pets and other such things. While they ate meat in the city, the highest amount of protein was found in plants. Some of those plants ate animals, but he supposed that would make sense. Knowing that they needed food certainly changed things.
"Oh." He finally said, as if somewhat surprised by this knowledge. "Well, you should have said so sooner. I proposed that you not do this during this time of year because it is most dangerous with the rains coming. This is when the rains fall because we are closest to our Goddess and without rainfall, the planet would likely experience a drought and all life will die. This is also the breeding season for many animals. They are more aggressive this time of year and injury and death will surely follow if you attempt to continue as you have. I am not telling you to avoid hunting and eating animals, I'm saying you should avoid doing it now. If food is an issue, I can certainly speak to my father and see if he can agree to give you some or allow you to be taught by some of the best hunters and trackers we have. However, studying these animals in a vacuum will not give any viable data that will protect lives in a hunt. Surely you understand this? All beasts react differently alone than in groups of their own."
Somehow, he felt that Light would not be willing to teach them, but he was more than willing to at least speak to his father. "I can speak to him and see what can be done. I will do all I can to make it so your people do not starve. IN the meantime, I must ask that you abide by some things that are practiced here, the first being gratitude and restraint. From what I see, even for purposes of knowledge, you have taken far more than you need. Such greed may inevitably come back to haunt you. I ask that you stick to basic principles of taking only what you need and using all that you take."

Those standing around the prince, shared confused looks. Wedy led, once again, if only because she knew how to. "We'll do our best to abide by these... principles." There. That was that. When in doubt, agree, until you find ways around it. They needed the information he could provide, and if all he was going to give were confusing 'do unto others' platitudes as rules, well, they'd just have to do their best.
It was difficult to grasp. As far as Gevanni knew, they'd done just that. The plants and animals they'd 'taken', were to be analysed and then put to use. Samples of any environment were necessary just to determine survival. Maybe it was a difference in a rooted culture, and one that not only had just arrived but were also barely scraping by. Who knew. For now, Gevanni smiled, "With your help, I'm sure we'll be able to survive much better, and won't have to take so many samples."
"And who knows. If we can find what we need to fix our ship, we probably won't even need to stay here, so it won't fucking matter in the long run anyway." Wedy crowed, laughing as if this were all some great cosmic joke. She waved Aletta over, who went sourly to her side. "You go ahead and take down whatever information Prince Near provides. You're already recording everything in that book of yours, so why not this too." She shrugged, getting up and wiping dust off her jeans as if she were writing off the whole conversation. "I'm going to go back to what I do best. See ya boys." With that, she waved and exited the ship.
This left Aletta to flutter to Near's side, her book open and her pen eager. "Start with that one!" She pointed at the bat he'd just named. She'd already forgotten what he'd called it, and asked him to repeat it again. It took hours before all of the animals were released and all the information recorded. At the end, the teenage girl tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her ear and gave her winningest smile. "Can I at least walk you to the edge of the camp?"

Near explained mostly animals. He had gotten to a few plants, but just the ones that were poisonous and that they should return to the soil or not consume altogether. It was a rather exhausting day. When Aletta asked him to walk to the edge of camp, he smiled and shook his head. "I'm sorry, I believe it is far too dangerous to allow that. I may not be able to protect you when you walk back. Please, stay here and be safe with your family." Again, he smiled and then ran off into the woods.
When he arrived home, he went to his father's private study. He knocked, and when he announced himself and was allowed to enter, only then did he do so. He came into the room and approached his father. Moving to his knees, he bowed to his father and hid his arm against the marble. "I must apologize first, for disobeying your orders, father." He stated, his shoulders just slightly shaking. "There was an incident and I saved one of the new comers from being killed. I did so in the hopes of peace and...
