Near had a feeling their father wouldn't be opposed to accepting knowledge if it would help them, especially if they had a way to divert the rains. He said nothing for now however and just nodded. "Our father is a particular sort of man and not just anything will impress him. Since I have shared some information with you, I think maybe it would be a good idea for you to give us something in return..." He paused, glancing toward Rester. "As a show of good faith, that giving you a place to live would be worth it in the future. Perhaps we could even ensure that there is food there waiting for you?"
IT was a gamble, Near was willing to admit, but keeping these people alive seemed far better to him than letting them die. Somehow, he felt that the Goddess compelled him to act, at least partially, on their behalf. At the welcomed gesture to approach the others, Near smiled and went to Gevanni. "I translated a book for you and your mother. I thought that I could show it to you and you could compare it to the plants you have. It may increase your food production substantially. I could even show you how to prepare some of it."
Rester's eyes followed Near and this man. For a moment, he caught Gevanni's gaze and almost threatened him with his eyes. These boys were vital to their culture, both gems that would lead their people. He would let nothing happen to them. "I have nothing. Do you wish to stay or return home?"

"...I think I'll stay." Verdant eyes followed Near as he walked beside the blue-eyed man, and Matt felt something queer settle in his stomach and roll around there. Instincts were meant to be heeded, but at the same time... Well. Near was an adult now, he could usrely look after himself for a while. He turned to Rester. "Would you like to observe the humans in their work? I think a walk around their complex will reveal quite a bit."
/.../
It took time, and discussion, before the humans had something of worth to offer in exchange for the Tviktas they were asking for. Almost everyone in the human settlement (except, notably, L) voted against giving their alien counterparts the key to interstellar travel. Gevanni thought that offering their own biological information, including copies of the DNA code that they had intended to use to recreate the animals of earth, would be a good idea. That got shut down quick, because they didn't want to unknowingly cause the collapse of an ecosystem they might yet leave.
It was actually Aletta who brougth up the idea that won. "Why not transporters? Any society would have use for zapping supplies from one place to another. And it's not like it can be used as a weapon, right?" She grinned, the little shit, because she knew she had the best idea.
Wedy shrugged, "...I have to give her credit. That's a good idea."
The idea won a vote majority, and from there, the blueprints and theoretical information was compiled into a book format and handed over to the princes on their next diplomatic visit. Matt wondered why in the world they made it into an analogue book when clearly they had the technology to give it to them digitally, but didn't say anything. It felt like it would be rude to.
It was delivered then into the hands of Light. Light spent a few days reading through it when he should be sleeping, and then handed it off to the cheif engineer in the city to put it into place as soon as resources permitted. He then gave permission for a specific set of slums to be used, as they were the farthest from the main city. "...Near and Matt will have final say in what provisions will greet them when they arrive."
/.../
Not even a week later, they were all moved in. L was still at the beach, overseeing the mission to break down and bring the ship back with them, because humanity would be damned if it's arc stayed scattered. Gevanni immediately looked over the farmland, and began running tests to compare it both to earth-dirt and the soil near the beach. Very fertile, and quite well-cared for, despite the fields running fallow. The only problem was... it was now raining constantly. No more little spats, but rather actual showers.

Near hugged his father at the news and took care of everything so Matt wouldn't have to. He managed to gather a good mount of food, enough to feed all of them for two months without putting a strain on the city's resources. They had a magnificent season, far more than they could viably eat in a single year. So, he thought it went to good use.
Once his father had finished reading the designs for the teleporter, Near started to follow L around the ship, asking questions on how it worked. It fascinated him. L chuckled, and finding the boy amusing, decided to make two small transporters. They were only large enough to transport small things, perhaps something no larger than a soccer ball. But Near was immediately delighted with the small contraption and brought it to show his father. He put something in his own room and put one in his father's study, so they could send things to each other. Granted, it wasn't much, but it proved the possibility of the invention.
"One of their engineers made it." Near told his father gleefully. "I believe you would like him. He's interesting and quite smart."
Near spent almost every day in the city. Their food stores were sufficent to help negate the heavy rain. The lands would be far more fertile after it. Within a few days of clear rain, it changed color to purple, which is what would fall until it turned black. Once black, it would end a few days later.
When Near arrived in the city, he went straight to Gevanni's house where L, Gevanni, and Mello seemed to be having a meeting.
L shook his head when he saw the boy. He got up, a rare instance that he was here and handed the boy a towel to help dry off. "You really should be more careful. Did you come alone?"
Near shook his head. "No. Matt and Rester came too, but they're making sure no animals are approaching." He smiled when the towel wrapped his body and he held it close to him. He dried himself off, but inevitably sat with them, still wrapped in the lush cloth. While he did not wear much clothing, he still liked being wrapped in shawls and blankets.
"My dad loves the transporter you built!"
L chuckled. "I'm glad. We don't have nearly enough materials to make a full sized one, however. When this rain stops and things get back to normal, I may be able to give you plans to make a larger one with your own resources."
The boy blinked. "Oh...well we have a festival after the rains. It goes on for about four days or so. I want you to come, but father would never allow that."

The sound of rain hitting the rooves outside was beginning to drive everyone nuts, so the prince's visit was actually quite exciting. Gevanni could only imagine what they would have to do to avoid cabin fever and seasonal mood disorder if they lived on this odd planet permanently. He himself had taken to printing out pictures of pretty landscapes and pasting them on the walls. The oddest part of this, however, was getting used to cooking his food over the heat from a removed, dead, organ. A goddamn heart. In a stove. Near had assured him when they first moved in that the city itself had power, and stoves very similar to what Gevanni had explained. However, here in the ... the... whatever they call it, they had to cook over a monster heart.
This was his life now.
So of course he was in the middle of baking what approximated for a fruit tart on this planet, when Near arrived. It was nice to have fresh food again. He'd already put some kind of weird beast, roasted, on the table, along with some fresh green beans salvaged from the ship. Mello was gnawing on a bone from the beast almost absentmindedly. Learning to cook this new food was a challenge, but GEvanni liked having something to do that didn't involve coordinating a shit ton of people. IT was a hobby.
"Near, now that I think about it, could you and L make another set of smaller ones? That way we could keep one here, and one in the castle, and send letters and missives that way? Like mail, except... teleported?" He offered, thinking it would be nice for them to communicate without having to run into a scout from the city, sent them and then wait for them to come back.
Matt arrived as this was mentioned, pushing open the door with a foot and carrying in a basket of what looked like furs. "I brought these. You're going to need them, since the meteorologists say that the temperature is going to drop almost ten degrees with the purple rains." He shivered just at the thought of it being so cold.
Gevanni was ECSTATIC. "You mean it's going to get down to almost sixty?!"
Matt blinked, "...what?"

Near joined the others in eating when L welcomed him to do so. "Hm..." he considered. "I could do that, but I want L to help me create it. That would make he very happy. I do want to try on my own."
L chuckled and nodded. "Alright, kiddo. I'll teach you how to make one."
Near looked up when the furs were brought him. He looked through them for a moment, excitement following. "Mm!" He pulled one from the basket and brought the large, black fur toward Gevanni. "This one is for you. I thought ti was the most well suited to you, you know, considering your size. I think it will keep you warm." He also had one specially for Aletta, but he knew better than the try and give it to her. She kept wanting to see him and then when he did see her, she got angry and he had no idea why.
Mello and L were talking to Matt about something, probably power or whatever, and Near found himself with Gevanni in the kitchen, "Can I ask you something?" he questioned, the towel falling off his shoulders. "Why does your sister hate me so much? Every time I see her, she gets so mad and huffs at me like I hurt her and I just... I don't get it." It almost looked like he was pouting. Of course, he had no interest in the girl and did't understand her fixation, her demands.
"She's so aggressive and I don't like it, but she does it anyway. Why is she like this? Are all women of your kind this way? Your mother certainly is." Near had learned the hard way that Wedy was not Aletta's mother a few days back. Now, however, he was standing fairly close to Gevanni, watching the man as he decorated the tart with fruits he had sliced. The white haired prince picked up a few from the plate and started to help him arrange the tart in a beautifully colored centered way. He glanced up at Gevanni and smiled.

Gevanni's tart was coming along amazingly, and he was actually kind of happy about that. Near's tiny hands helped out a ton for making small, delicate shapes. But he noticed a sort of... prediliction for matching up colors with colors, rather than allowing the colors to flow naturally. Gevanni didn't quite know what it meant, but the deep blue fruit slices were placed near the white fruit slices, and the yellow fruit near the red, and he just went along with it.
Listening to Near talk about Aletta was an excercise in second hand embarassment. To be completley honest, he had no idea what his sister was up to either. Other than... Well. It sounded like... "She might have a crush on you. She's never really had anyone her age around, so it's possible that she likes you and doesn't know how to properly express it." He shrugged, "I... I can't really tell you for certain. But I do know that if you don't like it, yoru best bet is to stand your ground and tell her that she needs to knock off the aggressive attitude."
He felt a little... responsible, though, so he sighed, "I'll try and speak with her about it. I don't want her offending you, so it's important she fix the behavior." He wasn't sure how he became Aletta's defacto guardian. But, since his mother wasn't going to take her in, and the girl had no other family, he supposed it had to be him. She lived in his house, he cooked for her, they talked on occasion... but there wasn't really that familiarl connecting, yet. He hoped it formed soon.
"And to answer your question, women are as varied as flowers. Any woman can be aggressive, and any woman can be passive, and you never really know what you're going to get when. So yeah. There's been a long cultural bias against aggressive or outgoing women, and they were seen as very masculine, so... Since that's lifted a lot, I think some women overcompensate. I don't... really know, and I'm certainly no expert." He clarified.
Setting the tart aside to cool, he found himself asking, "Haven't you ever had a crush before? They make everyone do really stupid things. My first crush ended in me accidentally breaking their leg." He chuckled, the memory kind of precious to him.

The idea of her liking him suddenly made sense. Part of that made him wonder if Wedy liked him as well. Then again, she seemed much closer with Rester now, not that he would ever since he was married and had several children, which was odd for their planet. But, he was quite... fertile, Near supposed.
"You don't have to speak with her if it is not what you wish. I can see this makes you quite uncomfortable and I should hate for that." He hesitated. "I understand you and she have different mothers and it is why Wedy loathes her so, but may I ask... why? Even you seem distant. If your father made the error, why is she who must pay for it?" After all, it could happen there, although it was very, very rare; even his aunt had children who looked quite different from one another and likely had different fathers, but no one ever mentioned this.
"We don't have such bias. I have often been told that my mother was the most aggressive woman here. She was in love with my father from the time they were children and it took years for he to finally persuade him to marry her, and that was after he was king." he smiled as he studied Gevanni for a moment. "She died... within a few days of my birth, so I never really knew her, but my brother tells me that she looked similar to your sister and to Mello, the blue eyes and long golden hair. IT is a symbol of beautiful here. If it is love your sister wishes for, she will find now shortage of suitors. Intelligence matters more than beauty, but she is determined to learn. Any number would be willing to take her as a lover."
The boy looked surprised at the question and stared at Gevanni for some time. "A.. crush?" he asked again, as if trying to reassure himself he knew the right word. "Why would I crush someone?" Then the flow of the conversation followed and his entire face turned bright red. While it was mostly concentrated below his eyes and down his cheeks, the tips of his ears also turned red. "Oh..." He finally stated and then laughed. The red started to fade gradually from his skin. "W-Well... I have had many crushes before, but I am... important, so my father does a fair job of discouraging feelings from anyone. Not... that it dissuaded everyone. Somehow, it was better, keeping it a secret. At least the last one." he smiled at him.
"Maybe that's why I kept all of you a secret for a while? It was nice... great, actually, to have something, someone who was entirely my own."

Gevanni recognist his own hackles going up, so to speak, when Near asked why Aletta should pay for Gregori's mistakes. His hands tightened on the dishtowel he was drying them with, and he found himself forced to take a deep breath, or he might have said something he regretted. "...I'm being the best brother I know how to be, Near." He stated, keeping his tone as even as he could. "You have to understand. She was born while my father was still married to my mother. He hid her for a year, before my mother found out."
How does one explain the utter betrayal of a man you trusted implicitly to care for and love you just... dissapearing? Cutting you out of his life entirely? Gevanni bit his lip, and decided not to. Just... Just not to. "It puts us all at risk, having a child without permission. Resources are limited, and we can't afford the extra mouths to feed. So of course we're all a little cold to her." He frowned, "my mother especially."
"Anyway, I'm glad to hear Aletta would have plenty of suitors, but as your father has made us plenty aware, there's to be no mixing, and we aren't staying. So I'm afraid it'll just break her heart if I let her try. So yes, it makes me uncomfortable, but I'll do my job as her guardian, and tell her to stop bothering you. Don't worry." Somehow he could feel that, even though he hadn't meant to, the tone of the conversation had gone very, very south.
Near's admittance that he'd had crushes before was kind of cute, in a way, but Gevanni wasn't sure how to respond without ruining it. "...Secrets can be fun." He agreed, the same way someone agrees with a child that a frog is pretty.

"I am sorry you had to suffer so. I can tell you are older than she, and it must... be difficult for you to support such a thing, having been so close to being a man." They had learned recently that being a man in the earthling culture was what becoming of age was to the Nahulians. "But, you are good to her, despite what you may think. She adores you and chatters of you with great fondness."
The idea of that, of hiding a baby and hiding what happened. While their culture was different, this is something that was much the same. Near bit his lip softly. "If... he had done something like that here, he would have been put to fire." The prince picked up a piece of fruit and ate it since there was some extra. When Gevanni looked worried, Near tried to explain. "it's a ceremony we have, where someone who has done something unjust to another, assault, rape, murder, adultery, is laid into fire and their body is burned. After that, we submerge them in a mixture of black and purple water. They have seven days to rise from the water. If they do not, it means the Goddess judged them to be unworthy. If they do, it means that they regretted their actions and are remorseful for them. It seems..." He paused. "It seems to work so rarely. I have never seen a person survive, but I do believe Ryuuk has. He once told me he's seen it effectively done. But that was almost a century ago, during my grandfather's time."
The ceremony was laborious and difficult. It was actually quite a peaceful way to die, as the flames here were so hot they consumed the corpse into slumber with rapid speed, or perhaps that was just the child's tale he believed because he was easier than the alternative.
"What about you?" Near asked. "You are healthy, of age, and one of the more attractive I have seen of your race. Are you not married? I find... I find that so odd." He meant fortunate, but settled with odd, as it sounded better than what he was thinking. "Then again, I am not surprised with the way you dress, all..." He tried to find the right phrasing in this language, "buttoned up and dressed like a gentleman." He grinned because it was funny to him, their strange words and the meanings associated.

Consumed by fire, jesus fucking christ. Gevanni couldn't imagine getting into a barfight and then being THROWN INTO FIRE for it. How exactly is that judged?! Do both people go into the fire? Is that the only punishment? The idea of learning more about Near's culture was harrowed now by fear of his judicial system. He took a deep breath and nodded, "We had a similar sort of process, on old earth, except with electricity, and we didn't stop until they were dead. Generally it was only for really bad crimes. Murder. Usually."
He paused, and took a deep breath. "On the ship... we didn't really have any way of keeping prisoners. So... Anyone who lost their trial... We coudln't afford to keep them around." He had seen exactly three spacings in his life. Two were for murder, one for rape.
The question of his own marital status definitely pulled him away from those dark thoughts, and he blinked, "A-Ah, no. I'm-I'm definitely not married. I don't... really see the point? I've never found anyone I want to be with. Also, I'll have you know humanity has had a nudity taboo longer than most people have been able to speak. So. Me dressing up like this is actually ATTRACTIVE to human mates, thank you." He huffed, mostly playing. "Thank you, though. For uh... For callin me attractive." He smiled, "I'm actually pretty plain by human standards. Well..." He paused, thinking about himself objectively for a moment. "Huh... Well I do work out..." Damn, now he was in a 'hot or not' mental cycle. "A-Anyway, it's not important because as much as I'd like to, I probably won't ever actually get married." He shrugs, cutting the tart.

"We usually hold them for murder as well. It is only in assaults of certain people. Should anyone try to kill the most powerful in our society or the most intelligent." Of course, these two were basically the same groups of people. "I have only heard of a burning for adultery once and it was because it was the man's daughter with whom he impregnated. Such a thing... is not allowed. I assume that your people have such rules as well." After all, no society was perfect and evidently, this was nearly a millennia ago, during a great plague that corrupted the mind.
Near seemed somewhat confused by Gevanni's change in tone. The blush was noting around his cheeks and Near found it strangely endearing. "Well... I don't see why nudity is such a concept for you people." He reached forward. "Come here for a moment." When Gevanni turned his body to face him, Near took the knife from his hand that had some custard remains of the tart on it since the entire thing had now been sliced. There was a small wall separating them from the sight of the others, but they could easily be heard, if anyone listened.
When the prince was sure Gevanni relaxed once he put the knife down, he showed the human his empty hands and then reached forward, very softly pulling his shirt from where it was tucked into his hands. "It's okay." He said softly, seeing the strange look come to Gevanni's face. Then, Near adjusted his clothing just slightly and when he wasn't stopped, he locked gaze with the human and started to unbutton the trail of buttons, but worked from the bottom to the top. Finally, once he had finished, Near removed the button down shirt Gevanni wore to reveal the dark tank top underneath. One thing about Gevanni was that Near could always smell his body. This planet was hot and the humans called it sweat, they sweated, or something of that sort. It was a biochemical release of pheromones and hormones, and some of their people smelled foul, but Near somehow found himself intoxicatingly attracted to the way this particular human smelled. Evidently they could not smell it, the humans had a less strong sense of smell.
"Isn't that better, considering how hot you always complain you are?" The two of them stood close, almost painfully close. Near could feel the hair's stand up on Gevamni's arm, watched his pupils dilate. One of Near's hands was still on Gevanni's arm, just so, softly.

"Of course we have laws against incest." Gevanni retorted, "We're not animals." He said it, but he knew that there had been rampant cases of incestuous activity on other colonies, and on old earth. He swallowed, hoping that it wasn't apperant that he was telling the better parts of humanity, and not the worst. Of course, then Near followed the change in conversation, and Gevanni frowned.
"It's a concept for us because... Well, to be honest, it all started a as a religious taboo that was spread by conquering colonists. But it's a human moral no-what are you doing?" He demanded, as the knife was taken from his hand. The air in the room grew thicker, and he was suddenly hyper aware of the sound of the others voices in the other room. The more Near tried to soothe him, the more his heart pounded. His cheeks heated, and for a second, for just a second. He forgot that he was wearing that undershirt.
He let out a shakey breath when Near was done, when he was standing so close that Gevanni could feel his heat. He swallowed, licking his lips, and forced himself to look away. "Th-Thank you, I suppose." He mumbled, taking a step back. His back bumped into the counter, and he took a deep breath. "I do feel much better." He lied, "Why don't we get this tart out to the others, alright?" He didn't wait for an answer, turning and picking up the knife again to finish cutting out slices. He plated them quickly, and handed Near one without looking at him.

The fear and discomfort Gevanni experience made Near uncomfortable too. He realized he did something wrong, made the human feel strangely aware of how different they were. The human lied, he didn't feel better. Now, the nahulian felt somewhat ashamed of himself. He took the plate when it was given to him, only because he didn't want to drop it. He held the tart in his hand and waiting as Gevanni disappeared. However, he put the plate on the table and looked out the window at the rain.
Somehow, he felt guilty, rejoining the others and so he stayed in the kitchen, not wanting to make the mortal feel even worse by following him. He climbed up on the sill to jumped out of the window and leave them, but ended up hesitating and just opted for sitting on it instead. He drew his legs up to his chest, flexible as all his people were and wrapped his arms around his legs, staring out the window, watching the storm.
Of course, he wasn't alone for long. L came into the room after him and softly pulled a curly lock of white hair.
Near looked up at him and smiled. "Hi."
"Hi." L leaned against the wall beside the open window. "You okay?"
"I am." Near tried to smile, but L just chuckled and softly pinched Near's cheeks.
"Don't lie to me, little one. It's okay if you're upset." He bit his lip, glancing into the other room where he could see Gevanni. "Did you take off his shirt or did he do it on his own?"
The boy looked scared for a second. "H-He's always so hot! And he complains he's hot and I wanted to help... I-I wanted to make him feel comfortable, but he just..." Near sighed. "I thought it would help him and I was wrong."
L chuckled and ruffled the boy's silk like hair. "You must understand, for us, doing what you did is a very close personal relationship. It just made him nervous."
"That's not what it is for my people."
"I know, Near, but for us, especially for a man like Gevanni, you acted as if you two were married."
Near's face gained color again, but not as much as before. "O-Oh... I didn't mean.."
"It's okay, kiddo." L chuckled. "I know you don't mean it sexually, he will get over it when he realizes it too. Now, come with me." He offered Near his hand. Of course, Near looked at the hand and inevitably sighed and took it. L led the boy into the room with the others, still holding his hand. Then, he sat Near down on the couch with him, making sure that Gevanni had already been seated on the other side, so there was no way they could possibly be close together.

"Wooo, take it off!" Wedy laughed, the second Gevanni got back into the dining room, and he sighed, rolling his eyes. He set the plate of tart in front of his mother, watching her dig in with relish. She was most proud of his cooking skills, despite how brilliant he was with plants. Sometimes he wondered if she really was his mother.
"Shut up, it was hot in the kitchen." He huffed, watching Matt scrape back a chair and head for the restroom. He had been surprised, upon getting to these houses to see an actual, working, bathroom, with a bathtub and shower, and a flushing toilet. It was so weird, he'd expected outhouses and wood-fire tubs. The only complaint he had was that the entire place was drab and dreary, the walls completely unpainted and unvarnished. A sociologist in their group estimated that they hung tapestries and silks in order to promote cool breezes.
He sat down himself, and took a few bites of his food, listening to the conversation. He realized he was lost, and decided to pop in, "Wait, sorry, what are we talking about?"
Wedy rolled her eyes, "Well we WERE discussing the possibility and folly of planting a ground-based harvest for next year. Please try and keep up, kiddo, we're getting bored over here."

At first, Near felt entirely fine, but when L got him his tart, he ate it, rather slowly and was thinking about what L had told him. he avoided looking at Gevanni, as to not make him uncomfortable, but he did get a few glimpses. It was at this point, he started to feel strange. He felt hot suddenly and uncomfortable. He moved and when he did so, he touched L's arm, which made him jump as if he'd struck him.
"You're skin is burning." L rubbed his arm where Near had grazed him and it left a mark.
Near looked surprised by this and also stood, touching his own skin. "I-I'm sorry... I just felt hot all of a-" His voice suddenly caught in his throat and he struggled to speak. He tried to say something, but strange, uneven choking sounds kept coming from his mouth. Inevitably, it looked like he wasn't breathing, but he also wasn't choking. His skin was dangerous hot the the touch, well over the normal human body temperature, and even elevated for his people. It was around 140 degrees.
Mello left the room and went and found Matt as he finished what he was doing. "Something is wrong." he said, grabbing Matt's arm and pulling him back into he room where Near was.
However, when they returned, NEar's skin had changed. It appeared as if his skin was illuminated by something. Shocked, the earthlings didn't know what was happening or what to do.
And then, Near's skin lit up brilliantly, making his skin glitter like gem stones. His eyes turned white and he started to shake. A voice left him that was light and entirely angelic, "Sh..." But that same voice was struggling. "Do not fight me." And the voice spoke in English. However, the voice vanished and Near's body shook and he fell to his knees. The glowing faded and then vanished altogether, but the boy's skin was still hot, too hot for the human's to touch with ease, but something Matt could touch with some discomfort.
