.the star that falls up↑
The streets of Tse Huam were crowded and hot. It was the middle of June, the 16th to be exact, and much to Aang’s displeasure, there was not a rain cloud in sight. He sighed, wishing he’d bought a hat from the shop he’d seen when he first entered the city, especially now that there were small beads of sweat collecting at the back of his neck. However, he’d decided that it wouldn’t be a long walk and he would be alright. After all, he was the avatar. He’d gone up against Firelord Ozai’s scorching flames and survived. What could a little sun do? The worst would be sunburn, but even sunburn wasn’t going to put his search to rest. He knew that.
He’d gone to Gao Ling and checked the place multiple times but there was no sign of his previous master. Then again, he wasn’t exactly surprised since she’d been living so long dependent of anyone that it didn’t seem like her to go back to the overly caring arms of her parents. Still though, he thought she might have gone home to visit them at least and maybe he’d catch her during one of those visits.
Sighing, he picked up Momo and dropped him on top of his head. “Be my hat for awhile, buddy.” Listening to the lemur-bat chirp, he laughed lightly. “I’ll buy you some lechee nuts in return.” At the sound of that, the animal stopped it’s chattering and let his arms hang off the side of Aang’s head, only seeming interested when the Avatar handed him water to quench his thirst and hopefully ease a bit of the heat off.
“Hey pipsqueak, you don’t want to fight a man like me!” Someone shouted in the distance. “I could squish you between my toes. Why don’t you go pick a fight with one of the kindergarteners over there, they’re coming out of school soon.” He taunted and was suddenly thrown onto the floor by an incoming boulder which seemed to appear out of now where.
Hearing the fight, Aang flipped open his glider, flying over the crowd of people suddenly interested in the commotion and landing in the middle of the circle. Determination dripped down his face, mimicking the sweat, as he threw himself between the two of them, sending a gust of air to knock them both down. He let out a loud sigh, preparing his lecture before he turned around, coming in contact with the familiar pale eyes of his earth bending master – well, former earth bending master. Despite that her eyes stared back blind and unseeing, he knew she was able to see him, in her own way at least.
“Toph! Is that really you?!” He shouted, as if she weren’t right in front of him. “I’m so glad to see you, I’ve been looking everywhere for you! Do you know how long it’s been? And what are you doing fighting?”

During the war, Tse Huam had been a town in which earth benders took advantage of the city's lack of men and bullied many of it's citizens for food, water, shelter, and occasionally satisfactory company. Unfortunately, after the war, many of these Earth benders had settled down there and still took advantage of the citizens when they had the ability.
Seemingly, not much had changed here, except more men were around now that the war was over, but many were hurt, crippled or killed in battle.
None of this affected the blind bender whom had many aliases however, because she could make things work for her. And, she wasn't a bleeding heart who had to make everything perfect for others. Granted, she would help if it was needed, but she didn't go out of her way to do so. Her pale green eyes shifted, despite the fact she was unable to see with them. Her foot touched the ground at an angle, allowing her to see a much larger area around herself. The sun was hot, and judging from the side of her body that was sweating, it was a little passed noon. Seriously, it was days like this she missed traveling on Appa. The wind from flying always cooled her down and then there was twinkle toes - a constant breeze that was just an arms length away.
A man walked into her path, but rather than avoiding it, her arm hit against his body, knocking him away from her. His challenge only brought a grin to her lips. This was one of those men whom she'd kick their asses just to make a public show of it. The blind bandit was never one to run away from a challenge and she was also someone who never lost a fight.
"I think you have it backwards. It's you who doesn't want to pick a fight with me, who knows how long it would take me to pick you out of my toes." She said uninterestedly. Fighting kindergartners didn't phase her, making her look up at him and snarl, long ebony bangs obstructing her bangs. Her arm rose, palm facing upwards, leg bending at the knee, causing a boulder to jump from the ground and knock the man clean off his feet and onto his side with a loud bang.
Something landed in front of her, or rather someone that it was impossible to forget the footsteps up. They were light, like a breeze and seemed to glide across the ground rather than walk. Punching him in the stomach Toph crossed her arms. "Gee twinkle toes, how many blind earth benders have you met?" She rolled her unseeing eyes and earth bended a small rock so she could sit down. "It's been a few years, I believe, right?" Resting her elbow on her knee, her head leaned in his direction as her chin rested on her palm. "That's a great question twinkle toes. I'm not a warrior or anything, so me fighting is really strange. Think we should check me into the hospital?"

Aang rubbed the back of his head, slightly embarrassed. "Well, uh...yeah I knew that. I mean, why exactly are you fighting? You should just ignore him an - "
Turning around as soon as the man launched himself at them, he kicked him backward, using the air for more power. The man hit the wall and as soon as he saw the arrow on Aang's head, his eyes widened and he stood. "I'm sorry, I did not realize that you were the Avatar! I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to cause any trouble!" He shouted, pushing through the crowd and running off. As soon as he left, the cluster of people slowly began to fade, some of them whining about how they wanted to see a fight.
Aang watched the man run off, turning back to look at Toph. He motioned for them to get out of the middle of the street so that they weren't holding anyone back. He was so excited to finally see Toph again. How long had it actually been? 4 years? It seemed so much longer. "Gee, it's really great to see you! I've been searching everywhere for you, I really need your help. I asked Sokka and Katara where you'd run off to but neither knew." He said, a grin gracing his face. Momo jumped off his shoulder and onto Tophs, chattering in her face and cuddling up to her, wrapping his long tail loosely around her neck.
Looking around, Aang spotted a tea shop. "Hey, come with me. I'll buy us some tea, I really need to talk to you. It's about my earth bending. I want you to continue being my master." He said, walking off ahead of her, glancing back in her direction. "I haven't mastered Earth completely yet, and I know a little more than the basics so it'll be easier for me to learn. I just didn't want another teacher since you'd already taught me most of it and I was used to the way you taught. That and you're a lot stronger than most of the earth bending masters I've come across."
He focused ahead on the tea shop, taking in a deep breath, the aromas flooding his nose. It smelled great, so it had to taste just as good. He hadn't had anything to drink or eat since he'd arrived. Not that he didn't have time or money, just that it hadn't occurred to him. He'd gotten so lost exploring this new city that his growling stomach hadn't even been heard.

"I never back down from a fight twinkle toes. Besides, he walked into me." She added, looking at him with dulled interest.
Truth be told, she did miss him, but if he was here, that meant sweetness had to be too, and she was still in no mood to speak with her. Unless Katara apologized first, she'd just pretend not to see her and ignore her presence entirely. Momo's movement onto her neck caused her to smile, and she reached up to scratch behind his ears. "I missed you too Momo." She said simply, rubbing his head as he curled close to his, his tail lacing her neck to brace his body and keep himself from falling.
"... idiot.." She whispered, sensing the man run off, far enough away so that Toph couldn't bend him into the core of the earth. "You didn't have to intervene you know. I can take care of myself. I know you know that." She heard his arm move, gesturing for her to move, which was proved right when she sensed his vibrations move away from her and towards what she guessed was a tea shop. She spent a lot of time with Iroh, so tea was a familiar scent. Walking by his side towards the shop, she glanced over at him.
She was silent for a moment, sending larger vibrations through the area in an attempt to find Katara, but continued to walk normally so he wouldn't notice. If it wasn't a shot to her pride, she'd ask the water bender's location, but it would make her seem weak, desperate to see the girl, which was the farthest from the truth.
"You always need my help Twinkle Toes, you just don't always know it." She teased as they walked closer to the tea shop. The vibrations were much stronger and she could make out the entire layout, size, location, and number of people inside the shop. "I could go back to training you I suppose. You weren't that great with it the last time I saw you. Sure you used ti against the firelord, but making a triangle to capture someone's hand isn't all that impressive." She added towards him. "Your dedication to Earth was nothing like your dedication to water or air. No offense. They just interested you more. You were an idiot when it came to earth. But I guess we can just pick up were we left off and I can torment you some more. It's you're punishment if you've slipped up and forgotten a lot of what I've taught you." Her tone held a threatening air to it, showing she wasn't kidding or messing around.
If he forgot Earth bending or slipped in anyway, she'd make him suffer to relearn it. There would be no going easy on him-not that she ever had-nor would she allow such pitiful excuses for bending. "I doubt you'll find a bender like me." She shrugged her shoulders as they entered the shop.
Over the past four years, Toph, for the most part remained unchanged. Her hair was a bit longer, she was maybe a few inches taller, her clothes were styled differently, her body had slimmed down a bit, and she'd developed hips and breasts. Other than that however, her stance, the way she walked, her attitude, her voice-it was all the same, and she showed no desire to really change anything. Her bangs still hung in her face lazily, drifting with each step she took. Like the element she had ultimate power over, she seemed powerful, unbreakable and unstoppable.

Aang laughed nervously. "Well...It's because it's the opposite of Air. Earth is heavy and sturdy while Air is light and flowing. It's just...hard to master. It's why I need you to continue teaching me. You already know how I learn and what the best ways to teach me are. And instead of seeing the earth shape and form into different shapes, you taught me how to feel." He said, taking a seat at one of the tables. "No one else can do that. And besides, even though you're tough on me when it comes to training, it really does help."
He knew that Toph was his best bet at completely mastering Earth. He knew that she was the only one that would able to shape him to be one of the best and strongest earth benders. She was tough and didn't give up on him. She beat it into him, and even though he wasn't used to learning that way, it worked. It fit with the element. Earth was steady and strong, just as she was.
"Hey! I didn't forget it...not all of it at least. I mean, it's been awhile. I've been practicing but it's only the same thing over and over. I want to be stronger and better at it. After I learn Earth, I have to perfect fire. It's another one of the harder ones, not quite as hard as Earth but close." Laughing, he looked toward the earth bending girl. He had noticed her changes, but knew it was better that he didn't mention it. Personality wise, she still seemed the same. "You're still like the old Toph. You're way too proud." He teased, chuckling.
The waitress came around, smiling at the two new customers. "Hello there young Avatar and friend. Are you ready to order?" Holding her tray flat against her body, she waited for the two of them to order.
"Hi, can I have a cup of green tea. Oh! And some dumplings please...wait, make that two." He said, licking his lips, feeling the water fill his mouth. His stomach growled loudly. When was the last time he'd eaten? A bag of chips when he was flying with Appa, that was all he remembered.
The woman nodded, looking over at the black haired woman next to Aang. "And you? What would you like to order?" She asked.

Toph sighed. "I hope you're not still thinking like an air bender. I hope you can understand the concepts of Earth and how different it. But if I have to steal your stuff and abuse it again, we can go down that road if you'd like." Her head turned to look up at him and her eyes narrowed. Despite the fact she couldn't see, it was a mannerism that she'd always had, and one she'd learned. "Earth is hard not to feel, Aang, you're connected to it. Besides the fact that you can fly, without it, you'd die."
Sitting in one of the chairs, she moved her hand with her foot on the ground so an empty chair slid from another table over to her. Picking up her legs, she rested her feet on it, resting her legs on the wooden surface. "Jasmine tea is fine." She added to the waitress. Yeah, she definitely spent too much time with Iroh. Maybe she should go go back to the fire nation soon. It had been months since she'd seen Iroh or Zuko.
"And some orange chicken." She added with a grin. The blind bender had a taste for meat, much more than the Avatar who didn't eat any type of animal. When the woman walked off, Toph wasn't connected to the ground, but could tell by the sound of her walking. Walking for a while made her legs tired so she wanted to have them up rather than having them on the ground. She could hear and see mildly through the chair.
Turning her head towards the Avatar, she arched an eyebrow. "Is it bad that I haven't really changed? I'd assume that would make you happy. That way you'd know what I'm going to dish out on you during training, and from what I've learned from traveling to Earth kingdom, you should be worried about what else I can unleash on you." Her voice was more teasing than threatening now.

Aang laughed. "I know, I've learned to stop thinking as an Airbender. It was hardest when you were teaching me to earthbend though. I mean, they're so different. I felt like I was going out of my natural comfort zone, it just didn't feel right. But once I got the hang of it, it felt amazing. One minute I could go from slipping across the ground unnoticed to stomping holes in the ground with me feet." He smiled at her, swiping a hand across his forehead. The sweat had disappeared, but he was still somewhat hot. It wasn't bothering him as much though. "And you better not steal my stuff again, I don't know where else I can get another glider. I'm not going back to the temple to look for Tao's father, and I'm not that good at crafting either."
"I'm not exactly scared of what you'd 'unleash' on me, only because I've learned to expect the unthinkable from you." He said, glancing in the direction of the waitress as she left to go grab their tea and food. Looking back at the pale eyed female, he smiled. Toph always was someone who was good at cheering people up, so it was no wonder that he was no longer dreading the heat. He'd forgotten all about it. Laughing again, he shook his head. "No, of course it's not bad! I'm glad I didn't stumble upon you only to realize that you were some girly, princessy, polite, vegetarian girl."
Just thinking about that made him cringe. He couldn't imagine Toph that way. She had always been someone who didn't care what people thought, someone who was more focused on her earth bending and helping him save the world than anything else. Even though in the beginning she made it seem as though she didn't want to travel with them, he could tell that she was just happy to finally get out on her own. He could tell that she was happy to be able to take of herself, to not have to hide her earth bending from her parents.

Toph uncrossed her arms, her head raising to move in the direction of his voice. She smirked at him, shaking her head, ebony tresses of hair sliding across her porcelain skin. "Out of your comfort zone... Well I can't imagine myself being subjected to air for hours on end, off the ground with nothing to bend, completely unable to see anything." She added sarcastically, knowing that's exactly what flying on Appa was for her. "And, you can slip across the ground more unnoticed when you're air bending rather than Earth bending. No offense, Twinkle toes, but I see you better when you're earth bending. You don't tap dance across the surface of the ground like a spider frog across the surface of a lake."
A grin spread across her lips and over took her entire face when he mentioned the unthinkable expectations he had of her. Which, made sense because she created metal bending and to this point no one else had ever learned it. "I didn't break your glider, but as long as you can still move a rock I don't see the reason to break all your stuff." Reaching across the table she grabbed a small bowl of nuts and took a handful of them, starting to feed them to Momo, who for the most part was curled up in her lap. At first, she never would have fed him due to the inability for her to see and that she hated looking weak, but after having him around for a while, despite the absence, she could easily remember and interact with him.
"I can pretend to be the first three, and did so the last time I saw my parents, but I don't think I'll ever be a vegetarian, so it's a good think you don't expect that from me." She grinned at him and went back to rubbing the bat lemur's head after he'd finished eating. The furry white animal curled up in her lap contently, comfortable and tired. His eyes closed and he slowly began to drift off to sleep.
The last visit she'd had with her parents had by far been the worst. She got into an argument with her father, about the Avatar who had saved the world, but still committed an unspeakable evil by kidnapping and brainwashing his daughter. Both her parents firmly believed that she'd been kidnapped and he'd turned her against them, and molded her to think highly of him. Each time Aang came to see where she was, she wasn't there, but they lied to him openly, greeting with with masked faces and false hospitality. The Bei Fong's were the richest family in the Earth kingdom, their daughter was a fine flower in an expensive garden that was easily hurt, wilted in the sun, and needed protection. Something Toph never wanted and hated returning to.
"How's the whole saving the world thing going for you?" She questioned, glancing up at him. "You know, since Ozai's fall and everything. The world is being rebuilt, things are starting to even out and the world is entering a peaceful aftermath of over 100 years of violence and death. You've mastered air and water, so now you're moving onto Earth with me, and then fire with Zuko, right?"

When the food was delievered, Aang dug in, eating the sweet tea dumplings and drinking the green tea. He was quiet for awhile, savoring the meal. Looking up at her, he smiled, picking up another dumpling and eating it. "Yeah, yeah I know. But you're not Airbending, you're just flying. It's hard to have to push yourself just to move a little rock." He laughed at her next comment. "Hey, I didn't forget how to move a rock, trust me it's not like that. I still know the basics. I just want to know more than the basics."
Picking up another dumpling, he held it between his thumb and finger, leaning back into the chair. Momo seemed content on her lap, eating the nuts that she fed him. He chirped occasionally, asking for another nut whenever she delayed the delivery. Aang nodded, dropping the dumpling into his mouth and swallowing before he spoke again. He laughed again. "I'm happy, it was so relieving knowing that I hadn't failed the world. It feels great, the people that thought I'd turned my back against the world before actually like me now. I redeemed myself." Picking up the tea cup, he took a sip. "Though, somehow I doubt this is really the end of my destiny. That's why I can't just give up on all the other elements. I have to continue learning, in case something else would happen."
Nodding, he looked toward the black haired woman, his gray eyes happy as he started discussing his new adventure. "Yeah, I'm heading into the Fire Nation soon. I was actually hoping you could come too, so that I could alternate between Earth and Fire training."
Even though he hadn't seen the Firelord in ages, he was sure that Zuko would be willing to help him. They were friends after all, right? He was also excited to go and see how he'd managed to change the Fire Nation. At least now they wouldn't have to disguise themselves and travel in fear.
"So, what do you say?" He asked, focusing his eyes on her. Her black hair framed her face and even though she seemed older and more mature, she was still the same Toph. Not in a bad way, it was good. He was happy to finally see her again, he had to admit he really did miss her.

"Yeah, but being helpless in the middle of the sky where you can't see or bend." She leaned forward to pick up her cup of tea. The table was made of a marble rock combination so she could send vibrations through it. Putting the cup to her lips, she arched a brow in his direction. Shifting her right foot to rest on the ground, she took of her meteor bracelet which was around her left upper arm. Tossing it to him, she picked up the stick that squired through the chicken and took a bite from it. "Bend that into a star, I want to see if you have really lost the majority of your skills. If you can't make a star, then make another shape. If you break my bracelet, I'll break your legs." A grin met her lips, one that showed she was serious with her threat.
"I knew you wouldn't fail, Twinkle toes. I doubted that you;d just let something like that happen. It's not like you're the sort to just abandon people and leave fate to the wind." She shrugged her shoulders and took another sip of her tea, giving Momo another nut when he chirped in protest for another nut which she;d neglected to give him in a few minutes. "I'm glad the war is over, even if I miss traveling around. Now that ti's over, it almost seems like there's nothing we can do. I feel useless sometimes, especially since my parents don't really treat me differently."
Her head perked up when he mentioned her going with him. "You want me to go with you to the fire nation to spend time with Sparky and kick your butt? How could I say no to that twinkle toes?" Resting her leg back up on the chair lazily, she leaned backwards in the chair, her back arching slightly, showing her lack of interest in the manners she'd been drilled on from such a young age. Moving her head to the side, her long ebony bangs slid across her face and she took another bite of her chicken. "Where's Appa?" She suddenly realized, having not seen him with his companion. "Did you leave him in the woods outside of town because of his size?"

Aang set his cup down quickly to catch the bracelet that was thrown in direction. He stared down at it, blinking. "Uhh...alright then." Biting his tongue, he dropped the bracelet into his palm, using his other hand to try and shape it. He looked up at her for a moment, smiling. "Thanks, I'm glad to know I had your trust the whole time. I wasn't sure if I could do it myself. I really kept thinking I would mess up." He said, focusing his attention back to the object in his hands.
It was harder to shape the Earth into something than to just dislodge rocks from the ground and throw them at someone. He felt the sweat rise to his forehead again, whether it was from the heat or his concentration he didn't know. When he finished, he managed to make something that looked something like a star. It had five points, but one of them was longer than the others, making it seem distorted. "Is that good? It's not as easy as it looks you know...Its easier to just move things rather than craft them like this.." He said, making no attempt to hand her back the bracelet. Instead he continued to work with it, trying to form other shapes.
"That's great!" He said, glancing up at her, almost dropping the bracelet. "It'll be like a team reunion. You'll see Sokka and Katara and Suki, and then when we get to the Fire Nation we'll see Zuko." He said happily. It had been years since all of them had been together and he was really looking forward to it. "Yeah he's in front of the city, the border guards are watching him. I couldn't bring him in since the streets here are so tight."

"Everyone knew you could do it, it was just a matter of you being able to kill him. None of us wanted you to be in pain, but until you learned to take away someone's bending, there was really no other options. You found a way around it though, so it just shows what you can find when you look." She smiled at him, listening to him bending the bracelet. Putting one of her legs on the ground again, she sent vibrations through the ground to see the object in his hand when he completed his task. "Yeah, that's good enough. Keep working at it. It makes you focus more, sure it's hard for you, but that's because you're out of practice. If you want to master Earth then you need to be able to do that without struggle or complaining. I'll find a way to make your training more interesting and give you a faster grasp. You have the basic concepts, so we should work on making it perfect I suppose."
He continued to bend her bracelet and made no effort to hand it back to her. Leaning her head back, her unseeing eyes wandered to the ceiling. She winced when Aang mentioned Katara, but tried not to show it. If he caught it or not, she didn't know. As someone who couldn't see, she was never sure what other people saw, or how seeing actually worked. "Well if we're going to practice earth and fire we should go see Zuko first. Personally I like the fire nation rather than the North or South pole. I have to wear shoes and I can't send vibrations through ice and snow. At least not well." The words were true, but the larger portion of it was she didn't want to see or speak to the blind bender she hadn't spoken or associated with in almost two years.

Aang looked down at the bracelet, tossing it into the air and catching it again, his eyes following it the entire time. \"I thought people were going to be angry at me for not killing him when I had the chance, but...I didn\'t care. I knew there had to be some way around it, I didn\'t want to kill anyone no matter how evil they are. Every soul is sacred.\" He said, recalling Chan Sen\'s words. \"Then this giant turtle lion told me the secret behind taking away someone\'s bending. I was so relieved when I found out I had a way around it.\" He said, looking over at her.
Aang wasn\'t stupid. He was very observant so when she winced - even though she tried not to show it - he noticed. He didn\'t say anything though, he didn\'t want her to get angry at him for asking stupid questions. \"Well, Sokka and the rest of them are on Kiyoshi Island so we have to pick them up on the way there. It won\'t take us long and you can just help with my earth bending while we\'re in the Fire Nation. I don\'t want to focus on just one of the elements, I want to rotate between the two. That way I\'m not overworking one of them.\"

"I didn't think there was a way around killing him to be honest with you. I assumed that you'd have to kill him and then would fall apart because you wouldn't be able to accept what you did. But you finding a way around it was impressive. And it's that sort of air bender talk that made Earth bending so hard for you." She teased, then stretching her arms over her head. Glancing in his direction, she shrugged.
"If you're taking me somewhere, I'm not exactly going to complain about it, twinkle toes. I will teach you and if you want to go get Sokka then, whatever you want. I figured he'd still be working on rebuilding the South Pole or something. I doubt they want to watch you learn earth bending again. Training is better when you don't have an audience. Besides, you tend to get distracted and wander off when things get too hard, which you use quite effectively as an excuse. If you want to master earth and fire, I think it should just be you me, and Zuko. Then after you get better, like after a month or so, we can all meet up or something. On our way to the fire nation we can stop every day and practice some earth bending so we don't have to completely destroy the palace."

\"He was, but he and Katara left to visit Suki.\" He said, handing the bracelet back to her and smiling. He nodded, realizing she was right. \"That\'s true, we should probably go alone for now. We can invite the rest of them later, after I\'ve gotten better at Earth and Fire bending.\" Eating the last dumpling, he picked up the tea cup and drank the rest of it. Reaching into his pocket, he took out some money and left it on the table for the waitress to pick up later.
Looking up towards the sky, he contemplated something. \"When do you want to leave?\" He asked. If it were up to him, he\'d go right now. Everything he needed was on Appa so he had nothing to tie him down somewhere. That and it was morning, if they left now they would be there sooner and they would have a lot of daylight to travel through. Not that he hated traveling during the night, it was just that Appa needed his sleep too and he usually did that at night.
