Toph didn't want to indulge in the fact he broke one of the eggs. That had been the gamble, but she had really hoped that he wasn't going to break one of them. Now the humanitarian would freak out and mope around for days at a time, trying to make up for the fact he'd killed something. Not that it really mattered all that much to her. I mean... it was a bird? Come on, how could that really matter? She ate meat and eggs. That was like the same sort of thing. True what she ate normally had a chance to live but...
UGH!! What the hell, why was he rubbing off on her. "Don't worry about it. You'll just have to get it right next time." Her jumping however made her sightless eyes widen. Her hand dipped deeper into the rock and cupped around something small. Something... warm... Retracting her hands from the warm confines of the rock. "Aang..." She said slowly, opening her hand, revealing a tiny helpless Badger-Dove. It's body was bald, only a small tiff of fur and no feathers. Instantly, feeling heat, it started to peep and the two others in the rock started to make the same sound - pleading for food.

Her order to just get it right next time wasn’t exactly the most comforting that Aang had ever heard. The bird didn’t have to die, it didn’t need to be risked at all, and yet it had been. It was his fault that they had died, he should have stood his ground against Toph, he shouldn’t have let her trick him. His name caught him off guard and he turned to Toph, wondering what it was that she wanted. His eyes widened as Toph was holding a tiny Badger-Dove in her hand. The egg hadn’t broke! They had all hatched, at least so it seemed by the sounds that they were all making. “They’re alive”, he said in a soft voice. “Toph they need to get back to her mother”, he said suddenly as he looked to where the nest had come from. “They need food soon at the very least”

Somehow this made things much more complicated for her. Like most other people she'd never seen her food as a pet, but now... Well... needless to say, she wasn't going to be eating eggs for a long... LONG time. These babies had registered in her mind as nothing more than omelets earlier. Now... they were alive... Begging to be fed... It was sort of cute.
Dipping her other hand into the hollow rock, she twisted her wrist making part of the top falling off so they could see all of them. Putting her hand into the hole to put the other baby down, she left her hand in the rock. Almost like to reassure them or something to that effect. They were in the rock, so it was easier for her to see them, but it also made it show how fragile and easily broken they were.
"Then..." There was a pause, which was mostly due to Toph's uncertainty on what to do. What was this feeling? She'd never felt this way about something before...? Was this the crazy bond Katara seemed to have with everyone and everything? The natural instinct to be a mother that Toph had long since determined she had been born without. But... now? "Take them back to the nest... I just knocked it down from that tree." She pointed to the one not too far behind her. "Not like I can... you know... Fly it up there."

Aang looked at Toph as she adjusted the rock so that they could see all of the creatures. They were precious, all of them just looking amazing, this was what life was all about. Watching the miracle of creation before their very eyes. Aang couldn’t help but smile down into Toph’s hand as he watched them all, as if reality and time itself had paused for just this moment. Toph holding them, and seeing the look on her face was a miracle in and of itself. Aang wasn’t going to try to predict what emotion it was, but it was definitely something she didn’t have before.
“I can do that”, Aang said with a smile. “I’ll go up slowly as to not scare them, when they are so young they get scared easily like all babies after all”, he said with a smile as he took the rock from Topn. He was about to ask why she couldn’t earth bend herself up there, but than he realized that she couldn’t really see the nest that well. “Be right back”, he said before starting to glide up slowly, doing his best to maintain his balance which always came easy to him. He got up to the top of the tree and started pulling out the creatures one at a time, making sure to hold them safely while placing them back in the nest.

Somehow she didn't want to let Aang take them from her, however, she didn't do anything about it. As much as she wanted to take it back... she didn't. Sighing, she looked up as he acceded into the air, feeling his light weight and sissy footsteps leave the ground. Unsure of what she should be doing, she walked over to the edge of the tree's roots and stood under the shade of the tree in the intense heat.
Honestly, she was more worried about how things turned out than anything else. Her acute sense of hearing helped her determine how high up they were. About... maybe thirty feet? It was a fairly tall tree, she noted. "Come on Twinkle toes... before they die." She added, now uncertain about if he passed or failed the training. Did he break the eggs, or did they?

Aang flew up as fast as he could, cupping the little creatures in his hands in order to make sure that they stayed warm. Aang hated death, whether it was to friend or enemy. An innocent was someone that definitely shouldn’t die though. These were practically four babies that he was holding in the balance. One false move and it could be the end. Aang just hoped that they weren’t too late. He placed them softly in the next, only hoping that their mother was nearby. “You guys will be fine”, he said before floating back down.
As he landed he was surprised to see Toph so close. He knew that she didn’t mean to hurt anything, so perhaps she was worried that any of them were hurt. “I’m pretty sure they’ll be fine Toph”, he said with a smile. “I don’t know why, just got a good feeling you know?”, he asked with a smile.

Toph felt him return to the earth, his baby footsteps radiating in her mind. Letting out a sigh, she stood not too far from him. Smiling, she felt comfortable with what he'd said. "Maybe my blindness isn't the best some of the time." She said, a heavy sigh escaping her. "Thanks though, Twinkle toes." She said, dropping the hollowed rock onto the ground. "Guess that's the last time I try to torture you with eggs." Looking upwards, even though she saw nothing, she felt better. Her keen ears picked up the sound of the babies begging to be fed and the sound of air in wings as the babies moved closed.
Hearing a parent land in the nest, it moved through the nest, making a loud sound, feeding three of the four followed by intentionally knocking out the one Toph picked up and held the entire time.

Aang saw Toph looking upwards and decided to do so himself. His hearing wasn’t quite as keen as Toph but the sound of the chirping birds brought a smile to his face. It was like just watching he could tell that everything would be alright. He was the avatar, these things just came to him. Of course that didn’t mean that he was always right. Aang’s heart began racing as he suddenly saw one of the birds getting forced out of the nest. Thirty feet? That thing wouldn’t stand a chance.
Toph would feel that something was wrong with Aang through when his heart suddenly went like that. He leapt up, not even bothering to explain what was wrong before catching the bird in his arms, making sure to not snatch it. He slowly floated back down to the ground next to Toph again. “This one……….the mom hit it out”, he said softly with a tone of sadness.

A smile crossed her face, the sun was shining on it, making her feel more better about what happened. The air was warm, but she wasn't sweating like she had been earlier. Stretching, she felt Aang's heart almost explode, but before she could touch him, or finish opening her lips, he was gone from the ground. Knowing he was in the air, she moved her feet a little further apart, taking a stance that helped her to release more sonic waves faster.
As he landed, she walked over to him. "Maybe... I held it too long?" She pointed out, looking at him. Because he was on the ground, she could sense it. Picking it up, she bit her lip. "Or maybe they'll only care for a certain amount of children? Four is a lot.." She added uncertainly. "What should we do? Try to put it back?"

Aang didn’t want to admit that it was Toph’s fault, but that was probably the case. If a baby bird fell out of its nest and someone touched it than the mother wouldn’t accept it, because it would than smell like a human. It was a horrible truth, but a truth none the less. Aang just held the bird and looked at it, not certain what to do with it now. It needed its mother’s help to survive. It wasn’t even an hour alone and already it was completely alone. At Toph’s words Aang just shook his head. “No, it would only get thrown out again, the smell has lingered for too long………..I don’t know what to do here Toph”

Toph's heel hit the ground, shaking the tree almost spitefully as she sat down on a pillar she created. "Well..." She muttered. "If Katara was here, I'd say she could mother it to death considering her compassionate soul is incapable of anything else." She said, sighing. Rubbing the back of her head, she felt the hair on the back of her neck. Looking up at him needlessly, she bit her lip. "Should... we keep it? You already have Appa and Momo... it's not like another flying object would be strange for you, twinkles."
Shifting, she seemed unsure. Being blind, feeding a baby anything wouldn't be wise for her to attempt. Maybe if it was a human, she could guess on whether to stop, but on something like this...? Probably not... Even attempting it would more than likely kill it. The bird seemed content with her however, because it was close to her, curling against her chest, peeping for attention.

Aang only barely suppressed a chuckle at the idea of Katara actually mothering it to death. “I think she’s more of a people person, our animals were never on her best side”, he admitted as he watched Toph sit down on a pillar or risen earth. “Keep it?”, he said curiously as he watched Toph with it. “I don’t know, I mean Appa and Momo could long take care of themselves before I met them, this is different though. This is a little chick that needs to be taught how to survive”
He watched it curl up with Toph and peep at her for attention. “Well, apparently it sees you as it’s mother. The smell is recognizable”, he explained with a smile. “I guess it’ll look to you for guidance”

Toph threw a rock at him. "Well... besides the fact that that I can't fly... or leave the ground, that will never happen." She pointed out, a little bitterly. "And I guess Momo could always teach it to fly, right?" It was a good theory, and Momo would be close to it's size when it was grown right? If not, there was always Aang. the fact that she could be it's mother caused a conflicted feeling inside her. Most woman couldn't wait for the day they married and had children.
Complete the opposite, Toph didn't want children; ever. It wasn't really her strong suit. She wasn't good with kids, she was overbearing, strong, loud, cruel... she would never cut it as a mother. Someone would have to take her children from her in order to live. "I can't think of anything else we can do. Maybe if we go into town we can find someone who can will raise it for us. Worth a try, right?"

Aang from sheer reaction punched the rock as it came at him, shattering it as contact was made. He just smiled at Toph’s statement. “I’m sure you could fake it, you’re the great Toph after all”, he said with that smile never leaving his face. “Well they have somewhat different wings, but I’m sure that the concept is still the same”, he said with a nod. “I bet Momo would love to have someone more his size to fly with. Appa isn’t as tiny or as graceful as Momo”
Aang scratched his bald head at the idea of heading into town to find someone to try to take care of it. “Well I guess that is worth a try”, he admitted with a shrug. “It’s that or we take care of it”

Toph turned her head to face him, arching a brow, she made a face of bordeom. "Idiot, do you really think you could hand feed a baby bird? You'd probably kill it by suffocating it and I'd have to hold you while you cry for two days." She slid off her earth made seat and started walking towards the town. As they walked, she grinned. "It's like Sokka telling me to drive the giant airship during the invasion." She didn't mention he was talking to Suki, but it was still humorous to think about.
As they walked, she looked at him. "And the town is pretty small, so there has to be one crazy woman that lives there who isn't married and takes care of animals, ya know?" She questioned.
