light had never managed to wrangle the secret out of Mello, and it irked him to this day that there was something about him that Light didn't know. He and Mello had been business associates for many years. It would be rude to ask this man something about Mello that Mello himself had not provided. However, there was a lucky loop hole that he could exploit. "how is it you can stand in the sunlight?" He asked, frowning, "Shouldn't we find some building to duck into so that you can rest?"
The brunette nodded, letting his new charge go to bed. Gevanni himself was so tired he had wrapped back around into wakeful again. he hoped that the beer would put him down, at least a little bit, towards sleep. On nights and mornings like this, he would usually sit on Aletta's bed, looking around at her room. Luckily, he couldn't put himself through that torture now, so instead he listened to the news reporters drone on, until he couldn't take it anymore. Downing the last of his beer, he stood up, and went to bed, choosing to sleepily stare at the ceiling, until it dissapeared and sleep took him.
Sleep was always a roullette for Matt. He dreamed this time of an ocean, wide and vast, cold against his nose, and he let it continue. At least it wasn't the dream where he was crying on the beach.

L walked with ease through the streets as the sun came higher. "Now that is a secret worth my life," L teased in a coy tone as the two of them walked. "I suppose I can't answer you, since it would also answer why Mello is able to walk in the light. And, we do have some weaknesses while in the sun. Just know it is a gift offered to rare few, a gift often earned and it must be wanted. You are fond of Near, and you know he is unable." Then he shrugged it off as they walked through the streets.
"I no longer require rest. After all, it has been nearly five hundred years since I slept during the day, or at all for that matter." although he appeared to be a man around age 25, he did not look tired or at all fatigued. "I have contented myself to see the world, you see," now he offered information not asked of him. "to learn all I am able; the languages of humans, their understanding of history, the culture that changes throughout the world... It is all endlessly fascinating to me."

"How do you know of my fondness for Near?" he demanded, curious about how much this vampire had heard about HIM from Mello's kind. The idea that this creature knew something about him that he didn't know irked. It settled under his skin and made him want to shake with frustration. No one knew Light, not the way Light knew Light, and Light didn't know all of Light. It was annoying to think that this man tried.
his answer as far as his age made Light question the intelligence of what he was doing here, alone with a clearly, thousands of years old vampire. "I don't think it so fascinating. One human's thoughts are much like anothers. Differences are slight, if anything." He should know, he who spends his time studying them, their eyes their voices, their workings.

His fondness for Near wasn't exactly a secret, but L felt he should at least answer the question, it would be the right thing to do. "Near has told me." Came the honest answer from the vampire's mouth. "He is my youngest, and for that I am quite grateful for. You see, vampires are unable to hide things from their makers, as their maker's have control over them until they are released. While near and Mello never asked to be released, I let them lead their own afterlives absent of me, but I do check in on them from time to time to ensure they are alright. However, I can call to them and they to me. They are my sons and of my blood. They are me." A smile. "That and the way you look to him. Love is a very mortal affection, but I see it in you. Have you ever bedded him?" It wasn't a strange question.
"Humans are the same, but you are something slightly more than human."

It was most assuredly a strange question, and Light's face crumpled into disgust at the thought of it. Near? Light had never once entertained a sexual thought towards the vampire. While a part of him knew Near was older than Light would ever be, it still didn't stop him from thinking of him as a teen, as someone young, to be protected. Although... "So you're the one who turned him? why would you turn someone so young?" he asked, sure there must have been an important reason.
After all, to turn a child of fifteen would be cruel without some sort of extenuating circumstances, and Light couldn't see this man being cruel.

"Indeed I was. I turned Mello and Near the same night and raised both at the same time. Controlling one new vampire is a challenge, but controlling and training two was a nightmare. It was a different time then, however, since mortals were nothing more than food. Nothing more than a meal, to be taken and had." He shrugged his shoulders as they neared the docks. A boat was coming in with the night's catch. A horn blew loudly and the sun brought the rest of the world alive. It was refreshing to see life blossoming anew, somehow, L found it oddly satisfying to see hope in the world.
The reason he turned Near was not one he was comfortable speaking of. He had turned relatively few in the years he had been alive, but the ones he had turned had been worthy. And Near's mind made him more worthy than anything else. Despite some of their differences throughout the years. "It is not my place to tell you such things. If you wish to know why he was turned, you should ask him." A weak smile came to his face. "I will not tell stories that do not belong to me. I am a character in that story, but that does not make it mine to tell."

Damned vampire secrecy. Light huffed, looking out towards the slowly approaching ship. He gently eased some melatonin into his skin, darkening it to just this side of tan, so that he wouldn't have to worry about sunburns. "You do realize that he doesn't speak of it? And because of that, most people, myself included kind of assume his master to be a monster?" he tried, raising an eyebrow.
"Also, are you going to get sunburned?" he asked, cracking a smile, "Because that would be hilarious." As much as he tried to seem like an old soul, as far as Light could tell, he was only really in his early twenties. And sometimes that showed through with capital douchebaggery.

L sighed, "it is not me that he fears and will not speak of, but again, it is not my place." He insisted as they walked. The man beside him darkened his skin tone to protect it from the sun and this was something that amused L for some reason. "I am a monster, but I am not his master. I am his maker. There is a difference. A very distinct difference. Near is free to do as he wishes with the curse i inflicted upon him. I am sad to say I likely should not have turned him, but I was different then, but I do not regret having him at my side, or having him with Mello. They are good together."
He would keep this secret for Near, since Near didn't seem to want to tell anyone. "I do not wish to speak of turning him. If he wanted you to know, he would tell you."

well damn, that fount of information died. "Alright then, what DO you wish to discuss, oh masterful vampire?" He asked, raising an eyebrow as if to say 'go on then'. The wind kicked up, as it always did around the sea, ruffling that long black hair, and for a moment, Light thought perhaps it should be much shorter. He shook that off, and turned to look out at the ocean. "You do realize it's going to be hell getting back to the bar, right?" How had they walked this far already?
"Ah...I think breakfast is called for." He mumbled to himself, patting his belly. "Well, are you up to sitting in a restaurant while this mortal eats his fill, or are you going to fuck off to do something important for the vampire world?" He asked, teasing.

There was something about this shifter that L did not trust and it didn't seem to be exactly discrete. But L wasn't sure if this mortal would use what L had to saw of Near against the boy, so L opted instead to remain silent. His children meant more to him than anything and he would not sacrifice that boy for anything. So as they walked, he deeply inhaled the smell of the sea, since he could still smell many things, just no longer taste them. Even to this day he longed to enter pastry shops, if nothing else than to smell the sweetness, the pies. How he wished he could taste and consume the food the world now had to offer.
"I am sure we can find a place that will serve me blood," He added with a shrug. "But I will watch you eat." He then consented. He sniffed the air, then turned his head. "Come, we should go this way, there is mortal food." L had the nose that knew many things, after all. "We may speak of anything you wish. How did Mello convince you to become his errand boy?"

Following the vampire required keeping up with that ridiculous stride of his. His posture was horrible. Didn't he know how beautiful that body would look standing up straight and tall, proud? He assumed not. Also, he could use a few good pairs of jeans, because the ones he was wearing were not doing that ass any favors. The two of them exited the docks, heading towards the odd smell the vampire was following. "I am not his errand boy."
Light gestured towards the world around them. "I'm a shifter, with a unique talent. Vampires slip up. Murders happen. I'm lucky enough I can become a victim, stay dead until I'm buried, then dig myself out. It's become routine at this point." He shrugged, "And it pays the bills. When Mello pays me that is. He regularly runs up a horrible debt, and then I have to get annoyed with him."

L chuckled as they strode, L a bit more hunched than his companion. "Oh, that's simple. Mello has more money than any of the kings who have ever existed in this world. vampires often amass great wealth, especially with our abilities to glamor mortals with money into giving it to us. Most of the jewels from the Titanic were never found because many vampires need not breath and cannot drown." As they approached the diner, L seemed a bit happier with their line of talk. "He doesn't pay you to remind you who is in charge and who controls you, or so I would think. It sounds like Mello." Another shrug.
The closer to the diner they approached, the more people appeared. a small group of people were inside, all off duty officers. A few more where in there besides the staff, some dressed fine. They were definitely from the church, one of the men was often on television, the spokesman for their cause and a very handsome man at that. When L saw them, his posture drastically improved and he seemed more presentable and more human than before. He was pretending to breathe. When Light opened his mouth, he grabbed Light's arm and lead him toward a table. "I am avoiding a conflict, you must eat."

All of the clearly cult-worshipping freaks made Light's eyebrows drift upwards. Was this one of their meeting places? he wondered. he'd just been about to say they should perhaps find somewhere else to eat, when L seemed to shift next to him. Something was different. Something... Ah, that was it. he was breathing. and he had color in his cheeks. Light didn't respond, going over to a table and settling down.
"Well, if that's how he shows me 'who's boss', then he needs to come up with a better way. I can always quit you know, and it isn't as if I'm asking for a raise any time soon." He offered, shrugging. "Any group would hire me, given sufficient proof of my work. It isn't as if he could blacklist me."

"He could kill you?" L offered as they sat down. Then he made a face. "This means I have to eat. I hate eating..." He mumbled, seeing a bubbly waitress come over to them, happy to have people she didn't know there. Her personality was charming, but L was listening in to the conversation the other men were having. His hearing was good enough that he could do it without having to worry about then noticing he was listening. Evidently they came here at this time to avoid vampires. Day walkers often did not associate with mortals while they walked, for safety. Very few humans knew they could do so. Mello allowed three mortals to know of this ability he had. Light was one of those mortals.
Thankfully, the church was not aware of this rare gift. It was rare and coveted. No vampire under 700 years was even allowed to know of it.
"You are proof of your skill, but you are also cunning, my friend. Mortals would not trust you for long and would likely try to kill you faster." L had ordered crepes from the waitress, something Light had likely never seen. It was rumored that vampires could not eat and many of them didn't eat mortal food.

"He could kill me. But then what will he do with whatever corpse happens to appear?" He asked, shrugging. "Also, I was attempting to be subtle." He muttered, hoping the vampire king wouldn't fuck this up for the rest of them. He didn't want to end up at the end of a church lynching. Being able to stop his heart temporarily wouldn't work on these fucks.
"mortals wouldn't know exactly how I work, either. I could convince them I am just a regular clean up guy." The coffee he ordered for the two of them, and hi breakfast meal came quickly, with good bacon on the side. Light loved bacon. He also loved chinese food. But this, in particular was the greasiest food he'd ever eaten.
